Description

The aim of this course is to develop introductory skills required for Silversmithing using metal clay. It involves understanding the properties of silver clay and how to mould, sculpt and shape this to reclaim the precious metal contained within the binder (clay). You will explore heat processes and the safe use of tools, consider what makes a good design for metal clay, and you will learn how to make a fine silver item from planning to polishing. During this course your will produce samples for your portfolio.

At the start of the course you will complete an assessment and study skills to support you in the achievement of the qualification. You will receive information about the course content.

Examinations Venue Disclaimer
This qualification does not have a written exam at the end of the course but is achieved by the completion and submission of a short online portfolio.

What Qualification/level is this course?
This course leads to an NCFE Creative Craft Entry Award (Please note Silversmithing will not listed on the NCFE certificate). ACL will provide a certificate to confirm Silversmithing has been studied.

Who is the course for?
This course is for complete beginners who would like to develop their silversmithing with metal clay skills and knowledge. It is a good introduction to anyone who is considering studying a higher level qualification.

What can I expect to learn?
What is metal (silver) clay and how does it differ from more traditional silversmithing. Equipment needed How, and why we create a prototype to plan our work How to apply texture and use a cutter to create a piece of jewellery Consider what makes a good texture How to create and embed fireable findings How to create your own bails Create a mould to use in jewellery making Finessing work pre firing Firing silver pieces with a torch Final polishing Complete and present at least one finished silver item Compile a portfolio of evidence for assessment and achievement to the appropriate standard.

How will I learn?
You will negotiate your objectives with the tutor at the start of the course and these will be reviewed regularly. You will create a short portfolio to record your progress and evidence your achievements.

How will I know how well I am doing?
You tutor will set targets with you the start of the course and you receive developmental feedback throughout the course. You will keep a small digital portfolio of your work.

Will I have to do any work at home ?
Home study is required to complete your portfolio to gain your qualification

What will I need to provide?
The cost of metal needed on the first day of the course will be approx. £30 including access to silver paste. Please bring this with you on the first day. You will also need to provide additional consumables throughout the course along with the following: Purchase of your precious metal and tools. Consumables such as pen and pencil, notebook to sketch ideas. Apron. Appropriate clothing must be worn this includes closed toe shoes (essential). Hair band to tie long hair back. Glasses if applicable The tutor will give you advice at the initial assessment. A camera or mobile phone to take photos of your work at all stages of your learning.

Are there any other costs?
This will be dependent on the projects chosen.
