Description

This course provides a grounding in the basics of acoustic guitar playing, encompassing strumming, plectrum picking and basic fingerpicking. The course also aims to develop an ability to read music notation and guitar tablature, and introduces basic music theory to aid in the students' learning process. Suitable for beginners and improvers.

Who is the course for?
This course is suitable for beginners and for intermediate level guitarists looking to expand their skill set, develop their music reading and / or improve their understanding of music theory. It draws from various musical genres giving it a broad stylistic appeal.

What can I expect to learn?
You will develop basic ability on the acoustic guitar, coordinating your right and left hand to perform music. You will learn how to perform simple melodies and chord sequences. Scales, chord shapes and various playing techniques will be covered to enable this. You will learn to read basic notation and use aural resources to aid this process. You will also take in some basic music theory. Finally, you will learn how to practise effectively.

How will I learn?
You will negotiate your objectives with the tutor at the start of the course and these will be reviewed regularly. You will be given a sketchbook to record your progress and evidence your achievements. The tutor will provide developmental feedback throughout the course to ensure you get the most from your learning with ACL.

Will I have to do any work at home?
Yes. Regular practice will be vital to improving your musical skills. Your tutor will help you establish an effective practice regime so that you can get the most out of your lessons.

What will I need to provide?
A steel or nylon string guitar and plectrums are essential. A music stand, metronome, guitar tuner and a folder for sheet music are also recommended. The tutor will recommend textbooks and additional learning resources.

What can I do next?
The course will enable you to study a variety of musical styles in your own time. It can also help you prepare for music exams if you wish to take a more formal path in your learning (though booking and sitting exams would be done in your own time and at additional expense). The course is also designed to welcome back learners after the first 10 weeks, meaning you can continue your learning under the tutor's guidance.
