Description

This course is designed to teach students the basics of British Sign Language (BSL). The course will cover the basics of BSL including the alphabet, numbers, basic communication, facial expressions, and the use of hand signs. Students will learn the basics of signing through lectures, videos, and hands-on practice. The course will also provide students with an understanding of deaf culture and its importance in the BSL community.

What Qualification/level is this course?
This course does not lead to a qualification and is for personal development.

Who is the course for?
This non-accredited course is for complete beginners who have very little or no previous knowledge of the British Sign Language.

What can I expect to learn?
This aims to develop an ability to communicate with deaf people in BSL on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. Some of the topics that might be included in this course are: personal information, finger spelling, numbers, colours, weather, transport, directions, interests, food and drink. Specific topics for your chosen course will be discussed wiht course tutor at first session. This course is not accredited and suitable for learners with no previous knowledge of BSL or for those who do not want to take a qualification.

How will I learn?
Your tutor will use a number of different teaching methods to develop your skills. These will include a wide range of authentic materials, individual study, working in pairs/group activities and will include the use of video/audio. You will also have the opportunity to use online learning technologies to develop your skills.

How will I know how well I am doing?
Your tutor will give you feedback on classroom activities and tasks undertaken. Individual learning outcomes will be agreed at the beginning of the course, taking into account the course aims and your aspirations. These will be reviewed with you at regular intervals and you will be encouraged to reflect on your own learning and record your feedback in your Individual Learning Plan.

Will I have to do any work at home?
Home study is optional; but you will be encouraged to work away from the course to develop your skills and get the most from your course. To get the most from the course, we recommend you spend about 2 hours a week to go over what you have learnt and prepare for the next session. Your tutor will normally set you a task to do at home, which may involve reading, writing or researching information about a specific topic

What will I need to provide?
You might need to buy a course text book - your tutor will discuss this with you at the first class meeting, so please do not buy anything before then. In addition, you will need pen, paper and a ring binder in which to keep course materials, assessment sheets and your individual learning plan.

Are there any other costs?
No .All costs are included in the fee. Your tutor may give you details of an annual subscription to online resources or text book.
