Description

This course is for anyone who needs to improve their Maths skills for their everyday life, to increase their career prospects or to gain access to further or higher education and where English is not their first language. You will work towards a qualification. Classes are available at several of our centres on a variety of days and times.

You will need to complete an assessment and attend a pre-course interview with a tutor before starting this course, during which you will be able to discuss all the options available to you and any concerns you may have. What Qualification/level is this course?
This course is suitable for anyone where English is not their first language. You will be working towards a Functional Skills qualification. You will discuss the level of qualification you will be working towards with your tutor. The level you will work towards will be based around your Initial Assessment result.

Who is the course for?
For ESOL learners who need to improve their maths skills to become functional in their everyday lives and work, or for progression in to further or higher education. You will work towards a qualification. You will also have additional work to complete outside of the classroom.

What can I expect to learn?
The course will consist of various topics such as: Using addition, division, multiplication, and subtraction. Plus, topics such as estimation, averages, percentages, and fractions. At the higher levels you will also analyse data from charts and graph, find the area and perimeter of shapes, work with a variety of units of measure, time and weight and convert measurements.

How will I learn?
Your tutor will use a number of different teaching methods to develop your skills. These will include a wide range of authentic materials, individual study, working in pairs/group activities and will include the use of video/audio. You will also be set homework each week and must be able to commit to completing this.

How will I know how well I am doing?
Your tutor will give you regular feedback, both verbal and written. You will also have an Individual Learner Plan with personalised targets, to help you to acheive your goal.

Will I have to do any work at home ?
Yes. Your tutor will advise you of additional work that you need to complete. You need to make sure that you allow enough time to complete this each week.

What will I need to provide?
You may also want a pen, pencil, ruler, lined paper, and a folder for your work. You will need a calculator when you take your exam - it is a good idea to use the same one throughout your course, so you get used to it. You will not be able to use your phone as a calculator in your exam.
