Description
This course is for anyone who needs to improve their English skills for their everyday life, to increase their career prospects or to gain access to further or higher education. You will work towards a qualification. Classes are available at all our centres on a variety of days and times.
You will need to complete an assessment and attend a virtual pre-course interview with a tutor before starting this course, during which you will be able to discuss all the options available to you. Click on 'How to Enrol' button on the right-hand side of this page to book your assessment.
What Will Happen At My First Lesson
In the first week of your course you will meet your tutor and other learners, find out about the course and set learning targets.

We offer Functional Skills qualifications at all levels. You will discuss the level of qualification you will be working towards with your tutor.

Who is the course for?
Anyone who needs to improve their reading, writing, and 'speaking and listening' skills to use at home, at work, and to gain a qualification.
What can I expect to learn?
You will work at a level to meet your needs to achieve a Functional Skills English qualification.
You will improve your skills in the following areas:
1. Speaking, listening and communication
Take part in formal and informal discussions.
Give short presentations.
2. Reading
Compare, select, read and understand texts and use them to gather information, ideas, arguments and opinions.
3. Writing
Write documents to communicate information, ideas and opinions using formats suitable for their purpose and audience. Develop skills to improve your spelling, grammar and punctuation.
How will I learn?
Your tutor will use a number of different teaching methods to develop your skills. These will include a wide range of authentic materials, individual study, working in pairs/group activities and will include the use of video/audio. You will also have the opportunity to use online learning technologies to develop your skills.
How will I know how well I am doing?
You will complete a personal progress record each week in order for your tutor to support your learning goals. You will receive regular verbal and written feedback from your tutor.
Will I have to do any work at home ?
To get the most from the course you will be expected to complete additional work independently as directed by the tutor.
What will I need to provide?
You will need to bring a pen, pencil, ruler, lined paper and a folder for your work.
