Description
This course is for anyone who has a learning difficulty or disability and would like to improve their English skills for everyday life, to increase independence or to improve work prospects. You will work at your own pace and will have the opportunity to work towards a qualification.
Courses are available in all our centres on a variety of days and times.
You will need to attend a pre-course meeting with a tutor to complete an assessment before starting this course. At the meeting, you will be able to discuss all the options available to you and any concerns you may have.

What Will Happen At My First Lesson
The first week of your course will include an induction. You will also do activities that will help you to set your personal learning goals. You will find out more about the course and what you will be learning. You will meet other learners and learn about how to keep safe at ACL Essex.
Qualification Aim/Level
English Functional Skills qualifications are available.
Who is this course for?
This course is for adults with learning disabilities wishing to develop their skills in English.
What can I expect to Learn?
You will develop skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
How will I learn?
Your tutor will use a number of different teaching methods to develop your skills. These will include a wide range of authentic materials, individual study, working in pairs/group activities and will include the use of video/audio. You will also have the opportunity to use online learning technologies to develop your skills.
How will I know how well I am doing?
You will follow your own individual learning plan with progress recorded by tutors and yourself. Feedback will also be given to you during the lesson.
Will I need to do extra work at home?
You will be encouraged to use the skills you have learnt in the class at home and in the community.
What will I need to provide?
You should bring a file, paper and pen to the session.
Are there any other costs?
Please bring money for a drink and snack at break time or you can bring your own with you.

You can progress on to other courses. Your tutor will advise as to which is the most suitable.
