Description

An introduction to the main areas of counselling theory, the ethical considerations, principles and practices in person-centred counselling and an introduction to skills to be an effective listener. It is ideal for those wishing to use counselling skills in a helping capacity in their home or work life, or who are considering counselling as a career. The course is a pre-requirement for progression to the one-year Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills and will help you decide if counselling is the right career path for you.

What Qualification/level is this course?
This course does not lead to a qualification.

Who is this course for?
This course provides the first step for those who wish to explore counselling as a long term career path, wish to learn how to use counselling skills in their work and home life or those who are intending to progress to Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills. To access this course learners should have a good standard of English reading writing and speaking skills, work with a degree of autonomy accepting responsibility for their own work and co-operate with others. This course is not suitable for those who are in a state of emotional difficulty or psychological confusion. Please note that this programme does not provide a professional qualification or entitlement to practice as a counsellor.

What can I expect to learn?
An introduction to counselling skills and practice. Topics include: The difference between counselling and other helping activities; The ethical practice which underpins counselling; An outline to the roots of counselling and the three main areas of theory; How to be a skilled listener; Skills, attitudes and abilities required to be a counsellor; How to train to become a counsellor; Current legislation of voluntary registration.

How will I learn?
Tutor presentations, group discussion, group and individual activities including keeping a short weekly journal.

How will I know how well I am doing?
Tutor feedback, evaluation activities and self-reflection will enable you to understand your progress. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning each week, and record progress regularly in an individual learning plan.

Will I need to do any work at home?
Yes you will be required to complete some home study throughout the course, keep a journal reflecting your learning and complete assignment/s as set by your tutor. Additional reading and lnks to online resources support learning between sessions.

What will I need to provide?
Notebook and pen for notetaking. An up to date copy of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy is useful and available to download free from their website www.bacp.co.uk

Are there any other costs?
No. Reference will be made to a range of supporting texts which learner may wish to access for independent study however these are not essential to the programme.
