You will learn what deafness is. Different levels of deafness and the impact of this, the correct terminology for this, what can cause hearing loss. You will gain understanding of what is lip-reading and sign language. We will look at useful technology and websites and will explore what are the everyday problems that deafness may cause and how to overcome this.

This course does not lead to a qualification and is for personal development.
Who is the course for?
Anyone who is interested in understanding what is deafness and these can be parents, carers, any jobs that involve dealing with the public.
What can I expect to learn?
You will learn what deafness is. Different levels of deafness and the impact of this. Also you will learn what the correct terminology for this, what can cause hearing loss. You will gain understanding of what is lip-reading and sign language. We will look at useful technology and websites. You will also explore what are the everyday problems that deafness may cause and how to overcome this.
How will I learn?
Teaching methods include tutor presentations, supported by tutor handouts, group and individual activities, peer discussions and critiques, with use of information and learning technologies where appropriate.
How will I know how well I am doing?
Your tutor will give you feedback on classroom activities and tasks undertaken. Individual learning outcomes will be agreed at the beginning of the course, taking into account the course aims and your aspirations. These will be reviewed with you at regular intervals and you will be encouraged to reflect on your own learning and record your feedback in your Individual Learning Plan.
Will I have to do any work at home?
This isa one session course. Home study is optional; but you will be encouraged to work away from the course to develop your skills and get the most from your course.
What will I need to provide?
You will not need to provide any books for this course but you will need pen, paper and a folder in which to keep your session materials, assessment sheets and your individual learning plan.
