This course is for like-minded enthusiasts who would like to develop their skills with the medium of pastels.

What can I expect to learn?
You will develop your understanding of the properties of pastels and how to apply them to create a variety of effects using a range of mark making techniques. You will also learn how to use these alongside other drawing media, such as watercolour, ink, pencil and collage, to create artworks.
Throughout the course, you will be introduced to a range of techniques and ways of working with pastels and will have the opportunity to explore and experiment with these, as this is the most effective way for you to learn and to develop your skills.
Each week, you will be provided with a range of starting points to produce your artworks, as well as being introduced to the work of many artists and designers who have worked with this medium.
How will I know how I am progressing?
The tutor will give you feedback throughout the course and will use a range of teaching methods to develop your skills. These will include the use of a range of authentic materials, individual study, working in pairs/group activities and will include the use of video/audio. You will also have the opportunity to use digital technology to develop your skills.
Will I have any homework?
Homework is not set but you are encouraged to practise outside of the course.
What will I need to provide?
You will need to provide:
A set of chalk/soft pastels; a set of oil pastels (please check with the tutor to find out if you will need these before you buy any); putty rubber; pastel paper pad (if possible) or some good quality cartridge paper; sketching pencils; beldning stumps/tortillions (these can be purchased online and are inexpensve).
Additional mixed media materials of your choice will be required throughout the course, but these will mostly be iteems that would be readily to hand at home for you to bring in.
