Description

A Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) plays a key role as the UK reduces its carbon emissions by surveying, reporting and recording the current energy efficiency of a domestic property. DEAs produce Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) which, when lodged on a government website, display the property's current energy rating as well as potential recommendations on how to improve energy efficiency to obtain a better rating. A valid EPC is required when either selling or renting out a domestic property, they are also a major influence when a property undergoes a Retrofit or insulation upgrades.

The cost of this course is TBA. Or if you live or work in the Braintree District Council area you may be eligible for funding.

Qualification Aim/Level
ABBE Level 3 Certificate in Domestic Energy Assessment

Who is this course for?
To become a DEA you do not necessarily need previous experience of working in the construction industry or the built environment as this course will cover everything required for you to become qualified and have the ability to produce Energy Performance Certificates. Good maths skills, an eye for detail and the ability to input data into software will certainly be an advantage. You will undertake an Initial Assessment, where you will be required to complete BKSB English and Maths assessments, complete a pre course questionnaire and attend a one to one online Teams meeting with the course Tutor, to ensure your suitability for this course.

What can I expect to learn?
The course features several modules that covers all aspects of energy assessing, including learning about the types of construction, age of buildings, heating & hot water and lighting systems that are found in domestic buildings. You will produce floor plans, record photographic and written evidence from your surveys and be able to input your collected data into the RdSAP software that produce an EPC.

How will I learn?
There is a mix of group class sessions, research, e-learning, and one to one support sessions with your allocated Tutors. During the class sessions your tutor will use a number of different teaching and learning methods, for example, presentations, interactive activities, including discussions, questions and answers. These sessions will be supported by learning resources that you can review at home and these will enable you to complete the written work required to meet the standards for all the training modules. To complete the course and gain the qualification you will need to survey, record, input and produce a series of mock EPCs on 5 different property types. This will be explained in more details at the start of the course.

How will I know how well I am doing?
During each group class session a variety of assessment methods will be used e.g. directed or group questioning and discussions. You will complete a Learning Log at the end of each session and your tutor will provide you with verbal and written feedback to support and guide your learning. You will be allocated a Tutor who will provide you with one to one support and guidance through Teams meetings and these will be evidence through written contact logs and you will receive verbal and written feedback on your assignments.

Will I have to do extra work at home?
After each class session you will be set work to complete. You will be expected to complete a portfolio of written work. To support this part of the course you will be expected to carry out additional research and reading.

What will I need to provide?
You will need access to a computer with a reliable internet connection and camera to enable you to access the class sessions, one to one meetings via Teams and to enable you to access our chosen online portal, for research purposes and to complete written assignments. Pen and paper to make notes during class sessions and any support meetings you have with your tutor. To conduct your assessments you will also need a variety of other surveying tools* including a measuring tape and ideally a laser measuring device, a torch, a plastic ruler and probably a stepladder in order to access a loft hatch.

Are there any other costs?
Funding may be available for this course, speak to the tutor at interview to discuss your eligibility. Please see the list of surveying tools*. Your tutor will also suggested recommended reading materials that will support your learning.

What can I do next?
The Level 4 retrofit assessor qualification would be the most logical step once you have good working knowledge of the role of a DEA. Your tutor will be pleased to discuss other courses that might assist your progression in this subject or compliment your current job role or potential employment pathways.
