This qualification aims to develop learners a understanding of autism and the principles of supporting individuals with autism. The objective of this qualification is to help learners to understand an introduction to autism, how to use a person-centred approach to support individuals with autism, how to use communication and social interaction in individuals with autism, sensory processing, perception and cognition in individuals with autism, how to support positive behaviour in individuals with autism and how to support individuals with autism to live healthy and fulfilled lives. Typically, the course can be completed in 6 months.

What Qualification/level is this course?
The Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism qualification is in the context of adult social care. The focus to develop understanding for the principles of supporting individuals with autism. It introduces how to use person-centred approaches, communication and social interaction needs. It develops understanding for sensory processing, perception and cognition, plus how to support positive behaviour for individuals to live healthy and fulfilled lives.

Who is the course for?
This qualification is designed for learners wishing to develop their understanding for the components to attain a qualification in understanding autism.

What can I expect to learn?
The qualification comprises of the following core mandatory units: Introduction to autism Using a person-centred approach to support autistic individuals Communication and social interaction in autistic individuals Sensory processing, perception and cognition in autistic individuals Supporting positive behaviour in autistic individuals Supporting autistic individuals to live healthy and fulfilled lives.

How will I learn?
An online course where learners will also be asked to carry out research and reflection for the subject area and will be directed to online tools and reputable websites. Learners must successfully demonstrate their achievement of all learning outcomes of the units.

How will I know how well I am doing?
Learners will have an assigned tutor who will communicate on the online platform and when needed telephone or Microsoft Teams. Work will be regularly assessed and marked, and learners will be provided with encouraging developmental feedback. Targets will be set at different stages of the course to enable learners to meet personal and course objectives.

Will I have to do any work at home?
We recommend at least 7 – 9 hours a week to complete research, reading and home study. Typically, the course can be completed in 6 months.

What will I need to provide?
Learners will need to have access to a computer or device to enable them to visit the online platform to complete and submit work. Telephone to enable tutor contact. Pen/pad of paper for taking notes for example to use during one to one phone meetings.
